Why the Magic Is in the Journey, Not Just the Tricks

Last weekend’s show was one of those magical experiences that reminds me why I do what I do. The audience was fully engaged, and every moment felt interactive. From start to finish, the kids—and even the adults—were completely in the moment, laughing, gasping, and jumping at the surprises along the way.

After the show, a boy and his mom came up to chat with me. The boy was eager to share his theories about how my tricks were done, explaining in detail what he thought were the “secret methods” behind the magic. Most of his ideas were a bit off, except for the parts that were designed to seem obvious—leading the audience to believe they knew the answer before the big twist. But for me (and as his mom pointed out), the important part wasn’t whether he figured out the tricks. It was that he had been fully captivated the entire time and was still buzzing with excitement even 30 minutes after the show ended.

That’s the true magic: creating a journey that keeps people engaged, surprised, and talking about the experience long after the final applause. Magic isn’t about the “how” of the tricks, but about leading people on a journey from beginning to end, one filled with mystery, fun, and unforgettable moments.

Fun Magic Fact:
Did you know that some magic tricks are specifically designed to lead the audience in a certain direction, only to reveal a twist ending? It’s called a “magician’s choice,” where even the obvious seems planned, making the surprises hit harder!

Behind-the-Scenes Insight:
When planning a show, I think about each effect as a part of the whole experience. It’s not just about amazing moments but about building a story that keeps everyone involved, from kids to parents. This weekend’s show was a perfect example—connecting with the audience on this level is what makes magic so rewarding!
